How To Get Perfect Hair Colour

How To Get Perfect Hair Colour

No one does hair colour quite like Nicole, a born and bred Londoner with over 15 years experience transforming hair. Having just joined the Hershesons team, she namechecks Pamela Anderson’s ’90s blonde, Kate Moss with her “2010 indie sleaze dirty blonde highlights”, Devon Aoki and Mia Goth in Maxxxine as hair goals – she creates cool girl hair, there’s no doubt about it. With a “softness and lived-in feel” to the colour she creates, she is all about combining intentional imperfections with high-end execution for a natural, flattering finish on all hair types.

Let’s get to know her better, shall we?

How did you get into hair colour, and what inspires you?

“I started my journey at the London College of Fashion, where I did a diploma in hair and make-up and quickly discovered my passion for hair. Over the past 15 years, I honed my skills as a colourist as a senior artist at Bleach London and toured around the world with a pop star. What inspires me? Art history, which helps bring my creativity to life and encourages me to push my ideas beyond the surface, adding in concept and narrative.”

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

“Collaborating with clients to turn their ideas and vision into reality, which in turn inspires me to come up with different ideas that I may not have considered before. I love the element of transformation when doing hair colour.”

How would you describe your colour aesthetic?

“Adding an artistic hand to colour, while elevating and creating nuances in every look. I really embrace washes of colour to create effortless hair that looks like it could have been done at home.”

Do you dye your own hair?

“Over the years, I’ve dyed my hair every colour under the sun, and have loved it. My main focus right now though is to optimise its health and length, so I use a semi-permanent glaze to create a rich coffee brown.”

How can clients find the right colour for them?

“It’s important to consider their lifestyle as that greatly impacts which colours will suit them, particularly if they want a high-maintenance shade. It’s also helpful to enquire about their dislikes rather than focusing on their preferences, as people often have a clearer understanding of what they don’t like. Reference images can also help.”

Do you like statement colour and big colour transformations?

“If someone is looking for a change, I will encourage them to step out of their comfort zone if it feels right. That’s one of the reasons I love working with blondes; there are countless ways we can create a new look without compromising the quality of their hair.”

Are there any colour trends you’re loving right now?

“I love setting trends, rather than following them. My current favourites are peanut butter blonde and indie sleaze dirty blonde – see Kate Moss in the early 2000s.”

How can clients keep their hair healthy in between appointments?

“I am a huge fan of K18’s products to help repair broken bonds in the hair. I also recommend using cooler water when washing hair, as well as sulphate-free shampoos. Also, avoid sleeping with your hair tied up as it can lead to breakage. Good aftercare is just as vital as the colour service itself.”
