Ask Luke: Will Bangs Suit Me?

Bangs – in all their forms – are one of this year’s hottest hair trends, with excellent inspiration coming in the form of Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sabrina Carpenter, Keke Palmer and Cara Delevingne. The question that I get asked so often is “will they suit me?” – and my answer is always the same: There is a set of bangs to suit everyone.
There are lots of different types of bangs, plus it can be a relatively big decision to take the plunge, so it can be useful to know some of the broad “rules”. However, I always recommend talking to your stylist to see what they think – they can look at your face objectively and help you decide which areas you want to highlight, and which you’d rather not draw attention to. The power of a good set of bangs is that they can spotlight your eye area or lift the cheekbones, while obscuring other areas you’re not so keen on.
Round faces are often best complemented by side-swept or curtain bangs because they can help elongate and balance out the face. Meanwhile, square faces might consider wispy or layered bangs to soften stronger jawlines. Those with oval-shaped faces can get away with almost anything. If you’re someone with curls, you may want to try layered bangs as they can help enhance them.
Curtain bangs are unequivocally the most universally flattering style of bangs, as they can be adapted to suit pretty much anyone. They’re also really easy to style and a great entry point look for those wanting to try some form of fringe, but who don’t want anything dramatic. You can have quite long curtain bangs cut in and gradually take them shorter as you get more comfortable with them.
Most fringes need regular trims, plus it’s also worth noting that they’re not low maintenance. You will probably need to do some daily styling – our Zhoosh foam is brilliant at creating gritty texture, while our Round Brush and Great Hairdryer will help you achieve the right shape.
Fundamentally, if you’re considering bangs, I would say go for it. Book in with a brilliant hairstylist and ask them to teach you how to style as well as cut them. And enjoy the easy, effortless detail they add to your hair.
