Ask Luke: How Often Should I Have My Hair Cut?
How often should you get your hair cut? It’s a question that many of us ask our hairdressers, often to be met with the age-old “every six weeks” as an answer. But is that really correct? In a new monthly column, we ask Luke all of your burning questions. Here goes:
Q: How often do you actually need to cut your hair?
A: “If your haircut is really graphic in shape, or super short, and you want to keep it as you did when you left the hairdressers, then the six-eight week rule applies. However, if you invest in a great haircut, what you’ll often find is it will evolve into other cuts as your hair grows out – and you may like them.
The six to eight week rule is more about the shape you want, rather than a rule that impacts the health of the hair.
If you’re investing in a really great haircut, whether that’s a longer style or a bob, then you can get away with three or four times a year. Haircuts aren’t as structured as they used to be and they don’t rely so much on styling – instead, they’re wash-and-go and we work with your hair’s natural texture to create something chic and easy for everyday.
That old idea of having it cut every six weeks is pretty old-fashioned – it’s only relevant if you have very blunt lines or need to keep the architecture of the cut’s shape. When it comes to bangs, we offer free fringe trims at Hershesons for up to six weeks post-haircut, but a good fringe also evolves into nice face framing as it grows too.
You do need to get your hair trimmed periodically, especially if your hair is long. If you don’t, then the hair almost self-cuts; it splits and eventually snaps, so you stop being able to see the growth from the roots, because the hair is practically eating itself. Taking the ends off keeps it chunkier and healthier as it grows.”
